Seminary-level: Advanced Biblical Studies

This module introduces students to the study of some portions of  Scripture not previously covered in the Crosslands ​New Testament Introduction ​and Old Testament Introduction modules. In addition, it teaches some key areas of hermeneutics, both general and special, in order to deepen students understanding of biblical interpretation in theology and ministry. 

At a Glance

This course leads you through a detailed introduction to the books of Acts and Revelation, the general epistles and the minor prophets. It also introduces you to some of the fundamental issues in hermeneutics, both general and special, to show their significance for the practice of  biblical interpretation. You will need access to a good online library of theological resources to complete all the set reading included in this course. Set aside 10-12 hours per week to read, reflect and pray your way through this seminary-level course. 

Each lesson includes
  • A high-level introduction to a key Bible book, group of books, or key hermeneutical principles and issues.
  • A  range of set texts to aid and  guide your learning.
  • Interactive reflection and other exercises to help you apply what you learn.

The course also includes two written  assignments (a book review and an extended  essay) to enable you to deepen and apply your learning.

  • Pastors, church planters, ministry leaders and church leadership teams who appreciate the importance of understanding the Bible and want to deepen their skill in interpreting and teaching God’s word faithfully.

  • Unit 1: The book of Acts
  • Unit 2: The book of Revelation
  • Unit 3: Hermeneutics, Part 1
  • Unit 4: Interim Assignment: Book review
  • Unit 5: Hermeneutics, Part 2
  • Unit 6: The Minor Prophets (with a focus on Habakkuk)
  • Unit 7: The General Epistles (with a focus on James and 2 Peter)
  • Units 8-9: Final Assignment (focusing on either Acts or Revelation)

Tim Chester
Dr. Tim Chester

Tim Chester is a pastor of Grace Church in Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire, a faculty member of Crosslands. He is the author of over 30 books and commentaries including You Can Change and A Meal with Jesus, as well as being co-author of Total Church.

Dan Strange
Dr. Dan Strange

Dan Strange is Acting Principal at Oak Hill Theological College, lecturing in Culture, Religion and Public Theology and part of the Crosslands faculty. With a PhD from Bristol University, he leads a North London church and is married to Elly with seven children. His most recent monograph is For Their Rock is Not as Our Rock: An Evangelical Theology of Religions.

Tim Ward
Revd. Dr. Tim Ward

Tim Ward teaches at Oak Hill Theological College and is a Crosslands faculty member, having previously taught at the Proclamation Trust Cornhill Training Course. Before that he was the pastor of a church in Leicestershire. He has written a book on the doctrine of Scripture.
